Unbeknownst to most of us, a piece of legislation called The Cosmetics Directive (which was passed in 1993 was supposed to see the end of cosmetic animal testing in Europe) WAS NEVER FULLY IMPLEMENTED. This legislation was voted for by the good people of Europe after tireless campaigning and informing throughout the 80’s and 90’s by many animal rights groups. This is a piece of LAW voted for by many people, which our governments and many lobbyists from wealthy worldwide cosmetics companies have ignored.
Companies such as L’Oreal, Johnson & Johnson, Vaseline, Neutrogena, Dove, Pantene…(only a tiny fraction of the multimillion pound companies with powerful governmental influence) ALL STILL PERFORM HUNDREDS AND THOUSANDS OF ANIMAL TESTS PER YEAR.
‘Some of the biggest players in the cosmetics industry have lobbied to have implementation of the legislation delayed again and again. Each time the implementation date came close, another delay was applied for and granted.
So instead of the full protection of the law, animals have had to have only partial implementation of the Cosmetics Directive for the last 20 years.
The last time the cosmetics companies requested a delay, they were granted an extension until 2013.
Now that this date is approaching, another delay of 10 years has been requested and the European Parliament is currently considering this.’If the ban is not enforced and a new piece of European legislation called R.E.A.C.H is implemented this will effectively mean THE END OF CRUELTY FREE COSMETICS IN EUROPE. No more vegan or vegetarian cosmetic products, R.E.A.C.H means that by law every ingredient in every product MUST be tested on animals.
IT IS YOUR RIGHT TO CHOOSE ETHICS, IT IS YOUR RIGHT TO HAVE ETHICAL ALTERNATIVES.
